The New iPhone 5 Review and Specifications

Apple has been the king of smartphones for a long, long time. And with the recent release of the iPhone 5, this trend looks like it would continue for another year before the next iPhone would be released. It has all the features of the previous iPhones plus a whole lot of improvements and innovations to make it the best iPhone to date.

iPhone 5 Specifications at a Glance

  • Screen Display: 1,136 x 640; 326 ppi; 16 Million colors
  • Camera: 8MP (Primary); 1.2MP (Secondary)
  • Memory: 1GB RAM; 16/32/64 GB Storage (non-expandable)
  • Processor: Apple A6
  • Battery: Li-Po (up to 8 hours talk time on 3G)

The iPhone 5 Design

Apple does not move away from the iPhone look. It still sticks with the basics by not making many changes to the design. The same aluminum and glass exterior could be found in the iPhone 5. It's a wonder though that Apple was able to keep the iPhone 5 very lightweight at 112 grams (as compared to 140 grams of the iPhone 4S) while increasing the screen display to 4 inches (as compared to 3.5 inch screen of the iPhone 4S). The iPhone is a lot thinner this time around. It's really pretty slick and classy - one that you would want to show off in front of your friends.

The iPhone 5 Screen Display

Apple has always been a winner in this department and the iPhone 5 continues the tradition. It maintains its Retina Display and pushes it further by incorporating a much larger screen (though it is still smaller than the Samsung Galaxy S3). The results are fantastic as photos look more vibrant and videos look more alive. Also, with the larger screen, the new iPhone is much better for watching movies and your favorite TV shows than its predecessors. The capacitive multi-touch screen is very responsive without any noticeable lag between your finger inputs and the on-screen action.

The iOS 6

The iOS 6 is the new operating system used in the iPhone 5 but will also be available for download for other Apple devices. It features a user-friendly interface and comes with various handy applications as well. The obvious improvement is Siri wherein it is a lot more responsive and accepts commands from a lot of different languages like Chinese and Korean. The iOS 6 makes it easier to share multimedia with family and friends. Twitter has been incorporated as well and posting updates on Facebook is a snap. The Safari browser has also been improved. Facetime (which is a video call feature for Apple users) makes a comeback. Google Maps does not make it to the iPhone but you need not worry. Apple has developed its own Maps feature that could give Google Maps a run for its money. Another great feature for the iOS 6 is Passbook which allows users to gain access to available discounts, promos and events in a certain place. The iOS is certainly packed with goodies that would keep you satisfied for a long time.

The iPhone 5 Processor and Storage

The iPhone 5 uses the Apple A6 chip which is two times faster and two times more powerful graphics-wise than the Apple A5 chip. The iPhone 5 has a dual core 1000 MHz processor with 1GB of RAM. Playing games and using apps on the new iPhone is simply a joy to do. The iPhone 4 comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions. The only downside is that the memory is not expandable.

The iPhone 5 Camera

The main camera of the iPhone 5 is 8 megapixels. It has flash and takes much sharper pictures and less noise than the iPhone 4S. It performs much better in dimly-lit places. It also has auto focus, touch focus, image stabilization, video stabilizer, face detection, and geo tagging. It could capture videos in 1080p at 30 frames per second. On the other hand, the 1.2MP secondary camera is very handy when making video calls.

Battery Life

The iPhone 5 has excellent battery life. It reaches up to 225 hours in standby (2G or 3G) or up to 40 hours when playing music, or up to 10 hours of watching videos or up to 8 hours 3G talk time or 3G browsing.

The Final Verdict

The new iPhone is a surefire hit from Apple. From its impressive screen and battery life to its speedy processor and great apps, the iPhone 5 is definitely the phone to beat this holiday season. It has enough going on for it to satisfy even the most jaded cellphone user. If you have money to spare, go ahead and grab the iPhone 5. It would be the finest phone that you would get a hold of to date.

However, if you already have an iPhone 4S, it would be hard to recommend dishing out money to get the iPhone 5 because I honestly think it does not make a far enough leap in terms of innovation and improvement to handily beat the 4S. Don't get me wrong, the iPhone 5 is currently the best in the market. But that doesn't mean you have to get it just because you currently own the second best. Thus, your wait for the iPhone 6 begins.
